THE CLASSROOM
HOLE 5
SEX EDUCATION
U.S. sexual health education generally falls into 1 of 2 broad categories: Abstinence-based and comprehensive. Studies demonstrate that abstinence-oriented sex ed programs—which preach chastity as the only acceptable option—are ineffective and harmful. This hole, located in a classroom, highlights how and why these programs fail to reach their stated goals of reducing teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections. For sex ed to be most effective, it must be inclusive of all students, and contain discussions of abortion, birth control, pleasure, gender, and power dynamics.
