THE HOSPITAL
HOLE 1
SCIENCE AND MEDICINE

Hot take alert: Science and medicine are not objective. Experiments are conducted by humans and healthcare is provided by humans—all of whom are shaped by the world around them. As such, we should see science and medicine as sites for reflecting and reproducing broader social norms. This hole, set in a hospital, explores how ideas about science and medicine have changed over time through focusing on the clitoris, forced sterilization, intersex surgery, and the racist history of modern gynecology.
